The Arctic Convoy That Wouldn’t Die

Country: Allied (UK/US/Russia)

Theme: Heroism / Brutality

Convoy PQ-17, carrying vital supplies to the USSR through the Arctic, was attacked in July 1942 by German bombers and U-boats. Out of 35 ships, 24 were sunk in freezing waters.

Survivors floated on shattered rafts, dodging icebergs and enemy fire. Some ships still managed to make it—delivering tanks, ammo, and food to the Soviets.

Despite being a disaster, PQ-17 became a symbol of Allied sacrifice and endurance in the harshest conditions on Earth.
