How to Develop a Dieting Mentality

 

Once it comes to dieting, far too many people pre-empt their own failure before they even begin. They detest going on their diets and plot their blunders ahead of time. Regrettable but real, far too many would-be dieters are plotting their first Rocky Road blunder while eating their final bowl of Rocky Road prior to the big event.

I'm not sure why we do this to ourselves, but it's a common occurrence among dieters. The all-too-common belief is that one must binge on one's favorite and most appreciated foods before to commencing the dieting process, as these items must be fully avoided in order to lose those unwanted pounds. Nothing could be further from the truth, if one is honest with oneself. Moderation is merely a concept that many of us despise.

To make any diet successful, you must alter your attitude toward eating and your personal enjoyment of food. Nutrients are not the adversary. And that is a point that not nearly enough people grasp. Even 'delicious' foods are not a threat. Your adversary is your failure to ration food effectively. The issue is that the great majority of us consume considerably more of the incorrect foods than the correct ones. Herein is the rub.

Our bodies require the nutrients we are deficient in due to our failure to ingest the recommended five vegetable and three fruit servings per day. Our bodies detect a void and we experience hunger or deprivation. If we ate a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, we would notice a significant decrease in hunger and desire for less healthful foods. This means that we are much more likely to enjoy things in moderation, as they should be.

Another issue that we face is portion control. We live in a "up-selling" society. Almost every fast food meal includes supersized fries and a gallon of your favorite cola. You must develop the ability to say no to these requests and avoid situations where you may feel enticed to join in these larger-than-normal instructions.

To be truly effective with dieting, you must view the process as a way to build a better you rather than as a way to deprive yourself of something. Consider your weight loss strategy not as a negative force in your life, but rather as an opportunity to make positive changes. Negative thoughts should not be directed at your diet. When you are feeling deprived, keep in mind that you are depriving your bones of carrying that excess weight. Remind yourself that you are removing bulky clothing intended to conceal bulges from your wardrobe. Remind yourself that you are eradicating years of bulges from your body and restoring it to its youthful appearance.

Avoid being so consumed with the dieting process that you miss out on some of life's pleasures. Keeping a close eye on your weight and calorie intake does not guarantee that you will never exceed your allowance. However, the objective should be to achieve equilibrium. If you learn to properly portion your meals, indulge in moderation, and add fun calorie-burning activities into your daily routine, you may be surprised at the results.

Diets for weight loss and health are only depriving if they are allowed to be. If you are unable of self-control when it comes to indulging, avoid indulging at all costs. However, if you can learn to include those small delights into your routine in moderation while still burning the additional calories, you should find yourself a much happier and more successful 'dieter' than you have ever been in the past.
