A Home Renovation Project That Can Save The Roof

The majority of home owners like performing do-it-yourself projects all around the house on the weekends, many of them elect to add paint to the interior or exterior of the home. Others choose to install new fixtures for bathrooms, get a new flooring in the home, or just fix the back yard. Though, there's a major home redesign project that any owner of a house can perform that can save the roof.

Not matter where the owner of a house resides in the country, nearly every house has the same troubles regarding the roof. When the gutter system becomes overflowed, or plugged up owing to a blocked drain, it can cause extensive damage to the roof. This is often a result of a buildup of leaves, branches, twigs and debris that gets lodged either in the gutter, or the downspout.

Extensive damage may also be caused to the roofing system when the gutter stays clogged with debris and leaves. It is very easy for the water to get up underneath shingles or tile and cause damage along the fascia boards and the plywood situated just beneath the tile or shingles. The only way to ensure the roof will remain in good condition is to keep the gutter system working as it is designed.

Cleaning out the Downspout

Cleaning up the downspout is an easy process that requires the owner of a house to work on the top and the bottom. By putting a step ladder at the top of the downspout, clear away all debris that's reachable. Do the same thing from the bottom, using some type of a hose, or hook for getting any of the clogged debris located deep into the downspout.

Thereafter, take the garden hose in place it at the top, and turn on the water. This'll help push the lodged debris down the downspout utilizing a moderate amount of pressure. Work the hose up and down into the downspout until it's clear. It may require a broom handle or other long instrument to dislodge the stuck debris. Make sure and use some sort of a stick that has a large top, like a broom upside down, to ensure that the pole itself doesnt get lodged if dropped in the downspout.

Cleaning out the Gutter

The gutter can some times get clogged from blowing leaves, debris and other objects. Move the step ladder along the gutter and use your hand to pull out the debris and leaves. Follow that with the water hose, switched on full blast. This will remove any of the solids that have become stuck to the bottom of the gutter. Install gutter guards that will accept the water, but will push the leaves over the top of the gutter.

Keeping a gutter system operating as designed is the easiest home renovation project. And that is sure to save the roof from issues along the fascia board. The procedure should be performed at the least every spring and autumn, and anytime you think there's a clogged downspout.
